Crock Pot Spaghetti Sauce

Crock Pot Spaghetti Sauce

Spaghetti is a great weeknight meal for a large family like ours. It’s an inexpensive dish, and when prepared with love, it can be super tasty. I love making spaghetti sauce in our Crock Pot. A few hours of slow cooking gives this beefy sauce a rich flavor. And it couldn’t be easier to throw together a delicious batch of Crock Pot Spaghetti Sauce.

When we make spaghetti, we make enough to feed a small army – or really, just enough to feed our family. Feel free to half this recipe if you have a smaller crew. Or you could whip up a big batch, and freeze half for later.

A printable recipe card can be found at the bottom of this post.

Crock Pot Spaghetti Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 2 jars of your favorite spaghetti sauce – Our family likes Ragu’s no sugar added Tomato and Basil sauce. We prefer a savory flavor instead of a sweeter sauce.
  • 1 pound cooked ground beef – or ground turkey if you prefer, and you could certainly go meatless
  • 1 pound cooked ground italian sausage – optional, I like the added flavor of the sausage
  • 1 14-ounce can diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1 small 6-ounce can of tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup diced onion
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons of minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons of dried basil
  • Salt and Pepper to your family’s taste preferences

NOTE: This is a great opportunity to sneak a few extra veggies into your sauce. Finely diced, grated or shredded carrots and zucchini are wonderful. You could even puree squash or eggplant to add. A cup or two of veggies should go relatively unnoticed. It’s best to add a little at a time. My family did start to notice (and complain) when I added a cup of flax seed… so keep it simple. If adding a watery puree, you might want to increase the tomato paste to compensate.

Cook ground beef and sausage, drain any excess grease. I like to cook a big batch of ground beef and freeze portions to use later.

Prepare Crock Pot with non-stick cooking spray. Pour spaghetti sauce into Crock Pot. You’ll notice each jar has a little sauce left. Add about a tablespoon or two of water back into the jar, close the lid and shake what your mama gave you. Pour that back into the Crock Pot. No need to waste good sauce.

Add tomato paste and whisk to incorporate. This helps keep your sauce from being too watery.

Add remaining ingredients, stir to mix well. Cook on low for 3-4 hours and serve with your favorite pasta and sides. In our house we alternate with angel hair pasta one night (my husband’s favorite) and traditional spaghetti other nights.

Our twins don’t seem to mind which noodles we use – as long as they can grab fistfuls and rub sauce all over their bodies.
